Scientists are divided as to whether or not there are certain foods that could cause acne.

The Journal of American Medical Association wrote that Diet plays no role not so long ago.

However, there have been so many cases in which evidence tended to show the contrary that those cannot be dismissed any longer. Reliable scientific studies, such as those directed by Loren Cordain, PhD, are now definitely saying: of course, your daily diet plays a part in acne breakouts.

So what are the foods that can be beneficial to you, what are the foods that cause acne?

Popular wisdom:

Fatty foods can harm the liver, excessively salty foods affect the kidneys, the lungs can be damaged through unreasonable alcohol consumption, etc. All your organs can be positively affected by a healthy, moderate diet composed of good quality foods and negatively affected by the opposite.

And some would have us believe that the skin, our largest organ, remains immune to our dietary habits? Even though B-group vitamins have shown great results in improving skin aspect? Please do not doubt it: there are foods that cause acne.

From the scientific viewpoint:

Dr Cordain's study - Cordain L et al., Acne Vulgaris: a Disease of Western Civilization, Archives of Dermatology, vol.18, p. 123 - has opened up the way: even though some still do not believe in his conclusions, many others are now looking into the link between food and acne, and hoping the acne can be cured in a natural way, by eating the right foods.

Old and new

Is it possible to know whether our ancestors from the Stone Age had acne? Yes, indeed! Some primitive modern populations still have pretty much the same dietary habits as we had in the Stone Age, and scientists can study those. And what they discovered is: the teenagers of the primitive populations of Papua New Guinea, Africa or Alaska are pimple-free. So why aren't our teenagers? Are foods the reason? If so, what are the foods that cause acne?

A lot of money has been spent on agricultural innovations that allow us to harvest larger crops in a shorter time, to raise bigger farm animals very quickly, to grow bigger fruit and vegetable without pesticide.

True, it allows us to feed more mouths, but maybe to the detriment of quality. Could it also be to the detriment of health?

When people eat meat that comes from an animal which has ingested antibiotics or hormones or both, those pass into their body and worsen the hormonal imbalance that many teenagers experience, causing skin problems such as excessive sebum production, which leads to clogged pores and eventually, bad cases of acne.

Dairy products are just as bad. And what of foods that have been treated with pesticides, larvicides, fertilizers... what of GM foods? Do they affect the skin?

Let's have a look at the way fast food restaurants affect our skin. We are not here concerned with quality, but only with waste elimination. Fibers, which do not abound in either hamburgers or cheese, are essential to the elimination of waste material from the colon. Without fibers, that waste eventually goes back into the body.

Waste elimination is also impaired by an excessive consumption of salt, sugar and coffee. How so? The dehydration resulting from any of those excesses slows down elimination. Obviously, many of our modern dietary habits are proving to be unhealthy, and can particularly affect our skin. So now that you know which the foods that cause acne are, it's up to you to give them a wide berth!
