Study Acne & Diet - Top 3 Foods That Can Cause Acne Breakouts additional

Overview
As a result of clinical studies that identified the top three foods that can cause acne breakouts: white bread, sugary drinks and processed foods, a booklet entitled 'The Teenage Anti-Acne Diet' was published in 2007, later simply referred to as the Acne Diet. This booklet was written in conjunction with the Australian College of Dermatologists and was published following the results of two years of highly focused research into the link between certain foods and the development of acne. Aside from fatty foods, dairy products and processed foods, the worst culprit for acne sufferers, according to the results of this study, are foods containing carbohydrates that score high on the glycaemic index.

Clinical Studies
The research team was headed by Associate Professor Nein Man from the School of Applied Sciences at RMIT University. This particular clinical study focused on how the body metabolises glucose from food, with its corresponding affect on levels of insulin, and how metabolic changes can affect a person's skin. This study took two years to complete.

The idea behind metabolism of glucose and corresponding effects on skin resulted from carbohydrates in food that was known to have a high glycaemic index. When the body starts to digest these food there is clearly a very distinct rise in both glucose and insulin which, in turn, resulted in acne to develop, affecting both the development of the acne and its severity.

Reduction in Acne
As a result of this very important study that provided the medical profession with very credible evidence of the link between diet and acne, the top three foods that can cause acne breakouts were identified. The food group identified as being responsible for acne occurring, and for it developing in severity, was those foods commonly eaten by young people, many of whom admitted to being acne sufferers. As a result of this study it was possible to establish which the worst culprits were for people suffering from acne to consume.

Foods to Avoid
The top three foods to avoid, preventing acne from occurring, are:

• White bread
• Sugary Drinks
• Processed snacks

Clinical Results Published
Potatoes were also identified, although it has to be said that, rather than just potatoes, the findings refer to potatoes cooked with fats. These findings were published in conjunction with the results from this clinical study. Originally revealed at the 15th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology, the results of these studies were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, both articles appearing in July and August 2007 respectively.

In other words, acne sufferers need to take note of what has now become widely acknowledged as an acne diet and avoid fatty foods, processed foods and dairy products which are high in saturated fats. Instead, eat a diet rich in lean protein, fruit, fresh vegetables and whole grain carbohydrates. While an acne sufferer's acne will not clear up completely on diet alone, following this advice will certainly help the more severe cases of acne to reduce in intensity and encourage the skin to heal from the inside out.
